Reflecting on Liverpool FC’s past week

I posted this on a facebook group for Lebanese Liverpool fans. I’m not Lebanese but a friend who is invited me and I actually met a couple of the group members on my most recent visit to Beirut.

In case you are not up to date with what’s happened in the past week or so: We beat Man City over 2 legs to reach the Carling Cup final at Wembley. Beat Manchester United in the FA Cup’s 4th round and are now through to the 5th round (Last 16) to play Brighton if memory serves me right and we won 3-0 away at Wolves in the Premier League.

Good week or so for the club. Highlights:

– Strikers actually scoring. I am very happy for Andy Carroll in particular, I’m a crap football player but when I happen to have a good shot on target or close (or on the rare occasion when I score) it always gives me a buzz and some extra energy and sense of belief. I could tell in his body language that he feels relieved of all the pressure that was on his back to end his drought. Carroll was actually winning more tussles and he played with more confidence after his goal. The same goes to Kuyt, after his first goal in God knows how many months he scores 2 in 2 games. His movement is better and is getting back to getting more effective

– Gerrard and Carragher did not even start (Gerrard was rested altogether I think). Suarez is still banned. Point is- We are due to become even better once Suarez and Gerrard are back to the side and playing to their full potential. One of the few positives we had while Suarez was away is making the other players come more into the game and try to create things. The team imho was getting accustomed to Luis creating havoc in the penalty area and us scoring via him or some sort of deflection

– A clean sheet. Well, we were lucky not to concede in the last few minutes via that wonder shot from well outside the box (Blake was it?). A clean sheet is always welcome, especially to Reina who has endured a less than ideal season with a couple of blunders here and there, nothing as bad as a certain De Gea though.

All in all, we have reached a cup final for the first time in 6 years, we’re 3 wins away from reaching another final (FA Cup) and we are 5th in the league (For now, if Arsenal choke again we will still be there)

Now I don’t want to get too carried away, but 3 wins in a row (All coming in different competitions) is no small feat and credit should be given to the lads after a difficult start to 2012. Last season apart, we usually finish the campaigns on a high. I really hope we finish in the top 4, a Europa League finish will be more than acceptable but to have CL football back at Anfield will be a huge reward for fans’ patience.
